So, I was skeptical at first about this being a Game of Thrones in space. The first problem with that being that that might describe Star Wars. The second major problem is that this book isn't boring as hell and doesn't involve magic like the aforementioned two.
This is a complex multi-family multi-location palace intrigue situation while people are ignoring the zombie problem. Sorry, I meant "The Flow" not zombies. The Interdependency is a space community connected by a network of superhighways and also connected by the planets' mutual understanding that each cannot exist without the others.
The ruling family is the House of Wu. Their Emperox (space pope) presides over parliament, church, and government. It has fallen to the bastard-born Cardenia after her brother was beheaded in a freak car accident (clearly assassination).
The other part of the Interdependency is the noble houses which rule the guilds, complete with titles like Duke and Count. The guilds are the corporate interests and cartels of the Interdependency. This arrangement has been in place for a thousand years.
The problem is that "The Flow" becomes unstable every few hundred years and begins to shift in one direction or another, which can shut out certain worlds. These worlds will inevitably fall into ruin and collapse due to scarce resources and lack of autonomy. No world is very close to another world and no world makes everything it needs to survive.
The main locations are Hub, the planet which houses the Emperox and End, the planet which is about to be shut out of The Interdependency and left to decline and starve. It has already recently weathered an uprising as manipulated by the treacherous Nohamapetans.

Really solid speedy read by Scalzi, who I am growing to enjoy more and more. I love the quippy, don't give a fuck, characters that fill his novels, the humor that is embedded everywhere, while also taking things like the potential collapse of the universe as his characters know it, seriously enough for the scope of the novel. I'll be looking forward to enjoying more of this series, and seeing what indeed happens with the Flow.
I honestly have no idea what will happen next, which is thrilling!
