Beautifully written - liked but didn’t love this (characters weren’t super memorable), but I really liked how she wrote about the complexities of the mother / daughter relationship.

Library book!

This was hard work. I borrowed it from the library, started it and put it down to read a different book. Three times. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for Anne Enright. I loved The Gathering but found this so hard to get into. It was dull, it wasn't going anywhere, nothing was happening and not in the way that I usually like. I only finished it because, halfway through, I started listening to the audiobook read by the author. It came alive then and was so much more engaging. Who knows. My brain just feels a bit tired.

Espectacular.

As much as I wanted to like this book, it was just predictable and too much detail on unimportant plot points. The characters were shallow and not very interesting. I barely finished this one.

This is a book about LOVE, for her mother, in all of its complexities, for her own children, and romantic love for her husband.
