The story is chilling and personal. Even though Atwood scattered pieces of the backstory through the main narrative, it was easy to follow and instigated me to come back. Each page turn got me more curious about Offred's previous life, and I must confess that I cheered for a happy ending in some occasions. Indeed, that was foolish, since Offred was no hero, which was evident in her attitudes and reactions.
I could feel Offred's inertia and how she longed to feel something, but wouldn't dare to take risks to get it. It was not worth it anyway, as the system was almost omnipresent and the punishments were brutal. It made me feel claustrophobic to think about such a society.
I found the last chapter a bit redundant and hard to read. It was odd because the style felt very different from the rest of the book. However, it had some interesting comments from the "historians" that can lead you to connections you might not have done before.

I loved this book. It was terrifying and brilliant. But the lack of resolution kept me from giving it five stars.
