Wow…this book. An absolute eye-opener. Colson Whitehead does not hold back in exposing such a heartbreaking and horrific piece of history. Knowing that The Nickel Boys is based on a real reform school makes it all the more devastating - it broke my heart to think about what so many children endured.

Elwood and Turner’s story is both powerful and painful. Their friendship was a thread of light in the darkness, and it made the cruelty of the Nickel Academy even harder to stomach. And that ending - wow. I had to sit with it for a while, completely stunned.

This is a shocking, gut-wrenching, and brilliantly written novel. It’s not an easy read, but it is an important one.

I read this book in a day for my book club, and I rate it so highly because it was easy to read (despite how horrific its tale it) and I believe it rests on its merits on an exploration of an actual school that was in Florida.

As far as a work of literature, however, the writing itself relies on a LOT of tell-don't-show. I really craved more by the end of the book in terms of character development and suspense building.

If there are rules about how to write novels, one rule must be to follow your own narrative. Neither author nor protagonist follow a worn path. The protagonist might say, "Don't let the Man write it for you."

After a very enjoyable and moderately paced amble of back story, the throughline picks up from a trot to a full-on sprint. With almost fraudulent patience, Elwood's reality suddenly whips past the way it's supposed to be. All you will do, what you need to do, it's in the aftermath.
