Excellent book and writing. I think it was actually too short for me! I wanted to know the characters better. But I appreciate when an author can tell the whole story in fewer words. Second book I’ve read by this author.

This book was heartbreaking, even more so because it was based on true events and places. This is one that is going to stick with me. I'm adding some of the nonfiction books recommended by the author about the correctional school to my reading list.
Absolutely and fully devistating and important all at once.
i have a really hard time with historical fiction and getting into it just because it’s a lot of backstory and slow starts but as i kept reading i started to really enjoy it. a fantastic ending really it was a shock it made you want to reread it was great

Solid book, but -- and this may just be me -- it wasn't as harrowing of a story as I had expected. I mean it got quite dark and fucked at certain segments, but Whitehead spends a lot of time 30-40 years after Nickel, which in my opinion detracts from how fucked places like Nickel were. The twist at the end was quite good though.
Jim Crow era spotlight and yet frighteningly current.
The book doesn't translate well to audiobook imo. It jumps time and and has quite a few characters, so it was hard for me to keep track of it all through an audiobook. Not a fault of the book at all- but an observation.
