I felt like the book was skimming the surface of the story so I didn’t connect with the characters. I couldn’t get into the book without a connection. I was down on to the last chapter and the epilogue before I started to really feel anything.

The impact of this book comes from a place of terrifying authenticity. The author explores the impacts of racism and abuse through nearly seamless time jumps, connecting harrowing experiences of the past with their modern day impacts. While focusing mainly on Elwood’s story, he also shares related stories because the range of effects can’t be told through one set of eyes. Knowing that the author took time to research into the real-life mirror of Nickel, tying in true stories, heightens the purpose behind this book. I can’t say this book surprised me, because I’m not unaware of how our world was and still can be, but still an important read nonetheless.
