A heartbreaking story of brotherhood and resistance to injustice. The ending really surprised me—I didn’t see it coming at all.

The Nickel Boys is a harrowing and beautifully written novel that confronts the horrors of systemic racism with unflinching honesty, balancing historical weight with deeply human storytelling.

This novel should be immediately added to all high school reading lists; it's one of those books that would open hearts and minds. Based on a real-life "school" (read: prison/slave camp) for juvenile delinquents in Florida, where cruelty, starvation, abuse, and torture were a daily fact of life, "The Nickel Boys" is nevertheless a story of bravery, survival, and small victories that somehow make all the difference. I adore Colson Whitehead's writing; it feels effortless and therefore shows how extremely gifted he is. This book in particular reminds me of "To Kill a Mockingbird" - wonderful storytelling with a powerful message that comes through in the words and deeds of the characters.
