According to Goodreads, [b:Hide in Place|56197415|Hide in Place|Emilya Naymark|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1607344196l/56197415._SY75_.jpg|85844691] by [a:Emilya Naymark|20615367|Emilya Naymark|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1598783526p2/20615367.jpg] is book 1 of the Laney Bird series and I really hope that's true since I would love to see more of Laney. Thanks to her being an ex-NYPD undercover cop, this book read a lot like a police procedural mixed with detective fiction and I loved that about it. I also really enjoyed how the author mixed present with Laney's past so we could fully understand why she ended up leaving her job with the NYPD and why she's in the situation she's in now. The mystery in the book really comes more from her past than the disappearance of her son, although there is still a mystery hidden in that as well. This ended up being way more emotional than I was expecting it to be, and I loved that we got Laney's viewpoint as well as Alfie's.

I was immediately hooked as soon as I started Hide in Place, although I would say it is a bit on the slower side overall. There are still moments with plenty of action though and I think the switches between past and present really helped the story to flow well and keep the reader interested. Naymark did a great job weaving this plot together and the end had an element I never saw coming. It was actually a pretty realistic story as well which was a nice surprise, and it really makes it that much more emotional knowing it's something that could actually happen. And ALFIE, your heart just goes out to him, and I thought Laney was a pretty kickass character. Overall this was a very engaging novel, and I will definitely be looking forward to book 2!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.I had high expectations for this book. I jumped at the chance to read it after reading the synopsis. The story possessed enough to keep me entertained, but unfortunately it did not blow me away.

Hide in Place, book one in the Laney Bird series, introduced Laney Bird, a retired detective. She left the force after an undercover case she had been working went sideways and her husband abandoned her. She also wanted to spend more time with her son Alfie. Her son had serious behavioural issues, which had a negative impact on his ability to socialise with his peers. Then one day Alfie goes missing. The police, however, are not keen on looking for him. After all, this was not his first time missing. Laney, however, refused to accept this, and took it upon herself to investigate the situation on her own. In conducting her investigation, she discovered that one’s past has a funny way of returning to bite you on the butt.

The author narrated the story through Laney and Alfie’s’ POVs. This gave the reader the chance to experience Laney’s frantic attempts to locate her son. In addition, the reader got the chance to see Alfie’s actions throughout his experience with his kidnapper. The author portrayed the fears of both characters realistically.

Laney’s actions were typical of what would expect from a frantic mother. Alfie proved to be a brave soul. His ability to think on his feet proved to be his saving grace.

Laney loves her son, but it would appear she doesn’t understand him, placing a strain on how they relate to each other.

The majority of the story focused on Laney’s time as an undercover cop as it relates to the case, which played a role in hero resignation from the police force. She learned there was more to the case than she first realized, all of which were not good.

The author filled the kidnapping aspect of the story with tension, which had me on the edge of my seat. However, it did not possess the twists or surprises one would expect to find in a mystery.

Although not my favourite, Hide in Place proved entertaining enough for me to keep reading. Fans of police procedurals may want to add this this their shelves. This review was originally posted on Totally Addicted to Reading

Less thriller and more of a mother wanting to find her child. That is fine, but I just wish it was not marketed as this shock story. By no means is this book bad at all. It just was not a thriller in the way I thought. I did like it, but I was mad when I thought there was going to be more to the story and it was just ended so nicely. Perhaps a revamping of how this book is viewed would be useful so people are not disappointed the way I was.

Laney Bird is doing whatever it takes to be a good mom to her 13 year old son Alfie. She quit her beloved job as an undercover police officer and moved to a small suburb of New York, where she could work to get him therapy and special school services for the issues that Alfie has. One day, Alfie goes missing and to everyone but Laney, this is a typical troubled kid runs away from home and will come back when he wants too. As Laney starts her own investigation, she finds out that a man from her past, connected to the Russian mob, is back on the streets and looking for revenge. Will Laney find the one person who matters most to her or will she lose Alfie for good? If you’re into corruption, mobsters and mama bears who will do anything (including kicking ass and taking names) to take care of their kids, then this is the perfect book for you. I think the author did a pretty brilliant job of setting the scenery and the emotional tone of the book: I really felt Laney’s pain and the freezing cold of Upper New York State. This is definitely a good thriller, if you’re looking for reading about some badass characters.

Hide in Place by Emilya Naymark is a nerve-wracking thriller that will keep you anxious to find out if there will be a happy ending.

Full disclosure: I was given a free copy of this book from Partners In Crime Virtual Book Tours on behalf of the author in exchange for an honest review. This did not affect my rating in any way.

A retired detective has recently moved to a small town. When her son goes missing, the local police don’t take her seriously at first considering the kids history of outbursts. But when days go by and he’s still missing, and things from the detective’s past start to pop up, they realize that this isn’t just a teen that’s run from home… this is life or death.

I really enjoyed that this tale started out by really building the readers connection to the characters. So when the boy went missing, it caused immediate panic and frustration when the local PD wasn’t taking her seriously.

In her fierce determination to find her son, our main character makes a few decisions that will make readers shake their heads in dismay. But those risky choices soon start to work in her favor.

This one had me totally hooked. I couldn’t wait to see what was going to happen next, especially when we started getting bits and pieces of her backstory that made what was happening in the present even more terrifying.

My Favorite Passages:
He knew he should be afraid. But like everything else about Alfie, the things that scared him were not things that scared others.

The snow was going through a personality crisis as they drove, going wet and soft, turning to gray sluices of rain, then back to flurries.

My Final Thoughts:
This was an awesome thriller that had many layers. With each reveal, I just got more and more nervous to see how everything would play out.

A must read for fans of thrillers that don’t just go from point a to point b, but take various steps back to fill in crucial details for later on.
