“as a crab moves on the ocean-bottom, but is of the water, so man rests his feet upon the earth—but lives in the air. man thinks of the crab as a water-animal; illogically and curiously, he calls himself a creature of the land.”
my first nyrb book yay!! i read this because of rick macdonnell’s channel who i discovered through his matrix review. i found this book super chill even if it’s from the pov of a storm. there were still intense scenes but it felt like i was reading a documentary. i had no urge to devour the book in one sitting and just wanted to float in the words and enjoy the book for what it was. the buildup to the storm was quite intense. it started off slow but i think that was deliberate to build up anticipation. once the fifth day kicked in, things started rolling. it felt like watching a rube goldberg unfold. dipping in and out of the lives of the people affected by not only the storm, but by changing climate in general was so fun. it kind of reminded me of under the dome because of the multiple povs. though sometimes what’s happening went over my head and i found some parts difficult to visualize since i was not familiar with the geography of the place. i still liked it though and the writing reminded me of nghi vo because it wasn’t flowery but it was still so beautiful. just clear great writing.

Strong 4.5...very unique novel with a storm being the main character and only supporting roles for the people.

I had to read this book for a class but my hopes and expectations for it were high. However, the book didn't measure up. It's got twelve chapters, less than 350 pages but it felt like it took forever to get through. The author introduces numerous characters and then just leaves them for a while so that it is quite easy for the reader to get confused. It's also hard for the reader to really connect to any of the characters since so few of them are truly expanded upon in the book. Stewart's diction and syntax are good but that does not make up for the tediousness of the book.
