MAN FUCK THEM DOGS!!!!!!!!!! AND FUCK MARKUS ZUSACK!!!!!!!!
i only listened to this book because borrowbox categorised it under “climate conversations and the natural world” and the title intrigued me. and it started off just fine, with the introduction of the cats and the so-called wild dogs. the start sets you up to expect fun shenanigans, amusing mishaps and a heartwarming tale of love and growth and all the good stuff. well. i will just say i simply did not expect violent animal death, child and animal endangerment, irresponsible parenting and gross negligence.
markus’ love for his dogs was not pure or humane. it was absolute arrogance. he thought he could love these dogs into behaving. brother they are DOGS. he lets them go unleashed in public where they start fights with other animals, kill other animals, attack humans and markus thinks oh well, dogs are dogs right? god the more i think about this book the more my blood absolutely boils. it’s this guy’s fucking attitude.
he keeps putting these dogs in situations where they will endanger the family or other people or animals and completely brushes it off because uwu dogs are pure souls they’re man’s best friend and the most loyal animals blah blah bullshit. he is the least mindful person in the world and the least equipped to take care of dogs. never once did he even think he should take these dogs to a trainer?
i also don’t care that this was a book about the dogs when the entire time he had two cats he constantly treated as an afterthought. constantly. my god dog lovers are the fucking worst. the difference in how he narrated his cats’ deaths vs his dogs’ deaths like did he even care about those cats? the last straw for me was when the dogs killed one of the cats and mark has the audacity to say the cat had it coming. because what? the cat behaved like a cat and was curious and didn’t like being confined to a space? it was the kind of death deserving of this cat’s hardened personality? please fucking arrest this man right now.
the only reason i listened to this book to the end was to be a fully informed hater.
well i am informed and i hate this.

the amount of reviews i’ve seen saying this book was a love letter to dogs is incredibly jarring and concerning. are you all also this irresponsible with your dogs? cos if anything, this just made me deeply, deeply dislike dogs and dog lovers.
i’m so fucking angry. put markus on some kind of list to stop him from adopting dangerous dogs until him and his entire family undergo a training course.
