I did the audiobook, narrated by the author. When the thing that inevitably happens with dogs happens, the emotion can't help but come through as he reads. I don't recommend listening to the latter part of the book while doing your eye makeup in the morning.

As devastating as you'd expect a memoir focusing on dogs would be - but Zusak is such a talented writer that when you get the point where the dogs die, which you know is coming from his first chapter, he's helped you get to know and love them so well that their loss is somehow cushioned. The audiobook, narrated by Zusak himself, is the way to go about this book - hearing his voice crack and his tears begin to flow at the end is comforting as your own eyes fill with tears.

This is really a love letter to owning animals, both dogs and cats, although the dogs are the main focus. This book is deeply human and does a wonderful job illustrating the special relationships between people and their animals. I laughed and cried and I’m also making everyone I know read this book.
