A reflection on what it is to love a creature unconditionally.

This memoir tells the intertwined stories of Zusak's pets over the years, particularly his Three Wild Dogs. I found it slow and wasn't entirely hooked but grew more attached the further I read. A fittingly funny, stressful and heart-wrenching tribute to "problem" dogs everywhere.

Zusak is intuitively emotive and relatable in his storytelling. I admire his ability to find poetry and humour where it might otherwise be hidden, and to always balance the darkness with light.
