Just a guy who loves his crazy dogs!!
I'm not going to rate this because memoir, but I enjoyed this more than I was expecting. It took me a little bit to get into the tone, but I really came to love the dogs over the course of the book and the ending did take me out, which I should have expected but was naively hoping I wouldn't have to contend with. I liked that it showed the ups and downs of dog ownership, and think dog owners will definitely be able to relate to a lot of Zusak's anecdotes and feelings towards his pets. You could tell this was a very personal book for Zusak, especially as he tried to capture the essence of each dog, and definitely a change in direction from his other works.
It was also cool to get a bit of insight into Zusak's writing career, especially between the release of The Book Thief and Bridge of Clay. How his dogs were his (mostly) loyal companions during the writing process, but also how it was at times difficult to tour and be away from home.
I could see dog people eating this up, but think all pet owners will be able to find something they relate to. Not the easiest read (CW: animal death), but one I'm glad to have tried!
