As someone who is often described as “not a dog person” I think I am a testament to the success of this book; I’ve spent the last weekend convincing my partner to get a dog and trawling the local SPCA website. I devoured this book in two days on a weekend away in the city by the sea and I’m so glad it was the travel companion I chose. It’s well known that MZ has a way with words and this book is further proof of that. I challenge any pet owner, who has known the colossal love one can have for an animal, to read this without bursting into laughter or remaining dry eyed till the end.

I will always and forever adore Markus Zusak’s propensity for giving dogs dialogue.
"His eyes said _ I know I'm ridiculous but I'll love you till there's nothing left of me."
"For me at the end of the day a death is still a death."
"People might say that we only hurt the ones we love, but there's a darker truth beneath that I think in our unknown capacity to protect them."
"If their waiting on the other side? I'll know I'm not in heaven but a place just left or right of it _ some purgatory of love and chaos _ and to be honest I won't complain. I'll crouch and clench my eyes. I'll breathe and smell that smell. I'll grab those necks of fur."
A tribute to love and chaos and dogs

Three Wild Dogs is a wonderful nonfiction memoir on its own and much more so for dog lovers. The Book Thief, I am the Messenger, and A Bridge of Clay all signaled that Zusak must be a good person. Three Wild Dogs opened up the doors to his private life to a small extent and showed more of that character with how he loved these dogs and how his family interacted. The book just spoke to me in the way my family loves our dogs.
“…a pet dying is almost more devastating, because humans come and go – they have more connections, they’re out more in the world, out in their own lives. But a pet is totally ours. They stay. Only we knew them best. Only we really understood them. Only we could forgive them”
My biggest mistake was reading this book on a plane and not enjoying this with my 2 Great Danes to have a hand on them and hugging them at the end.
4.5 stars

Love his style of writing but couldn't care less about the subject matter. Would just read bridge of clay instead
