I refreshingly honest memoir of a man and his dogs. The concept of ‘if not the Zusak’s, then who’ would take in these dogs is definitely true, and I’m glad they each found their way to the loving and forgiving Zusak home. I’d be lying if I said I would ever take in such a dog, let alone 3, and even if I did they would soon be gone after just one event detailed in this book. I have often wondered why people choose to keep ‘problem dogs’, and this book has highlighted the absolute unwavering and unconditional love that is still shared, despite the chaos that they may bring. I also thought perhaps any dog could be well behaved if you train them well enough, though I think that was rather naive. This family did a great job providing such good training and shows you how dangerous these dogs could be in the care of someone who wasn’t so vigilant.

Perfectly describes the relationship , I will hug my Bertie a little harder tonight and remember how lucky we are to have him
(a menace maybe, but not a bully/attacker/growler/murderer!!)

He made some pretty dumbass decisions with his dogs, but putting that aside, I was hooked from the first page and it was very hard to put down. Memoirs are usually hit or miss for me, but this one was definitely a hit. Also shout out to Markus Zusak for having such a gorgeous and captivating writing style.
