My introduction to Kafka and I think a really great one. "Kafka-esque" is usually used to describe dark, deeply oppressive bureaucratic systems, but reading these short stories, I find a much more multi-dimensional writer. The stories can be dark and oppressive sure, but they can also be beautiful, funny, hopeful, or deeply personally distressing. Reading each story it felt like I was presented a little piece of Kafka's soul and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Also really liked the foreword by the translator. It's fascinating to read how much thought goes into translating these (often pretty complicated) texts.

One of the few books that I didn't really enjoy.

it was really sad to see how Gregor worked so hard and made money for his family, only to be neglected. After he turned, he could still speak but his family thought that there was nothing of him left in there and they just left him in that room to rot, having to only tolerate him, as the author said.
I also felt really bad for him in the end, because the way they just moved on so easily kinda made me feel like they just used him for his income. I know his mother was sad about it, and in the beginning I also thought his sister because she took care of him the most.
But In the end for them he was just a pest and they wanted to get rid of him, even though Gregor could still understand them and feel bad, and he still thought about how he could help them with some money he had saved.
