I read the Riyria Revelations several years ago (2017–jeez, almost 10 years ago!) and really enjoyed them. Sullivan’s prose is simple and unpoetic, but his storytelling is great, his books are fun and I absolutely love Royce and Hadrian and their dynamic. The Riyria partnership is perfect–a pair of total opposites who trust each other above all else and get into all kinds of hijinks.
The Crown Tower is the first book in the prequel series (Riyria Chronicles) and this one shows how Royce and Hadrian first met and the first adventure they embarked on. It also shows how Gwen escaped an abusive past to set up her own brothel, and how she was destined to meet and help Royce at some point in her future. It was tremendous fun. I loved the boys snarking at each other because of course they hate each other at first. I adore Hadrian and his golden retriever moral compass. I adore Royce and his snarky secrets. I loved Arcadius meddling constantly in their lives.
And Sullivan is great at creating tension. He had two things going in this book which were constantly referred to but that the reader had to keep waiting and waiting for–the moment when the two plotlines would finally converge and Gwen would meet Riyria, and the moment when Hadrian would finally draw his swords. Both were worth it. I really loved that their first mission together was pretty much a hopeless failure, but it still served the purpose of creating their bond. Good breather book.

This was entertaining as f*ck, plain and simple! The whole mystery at the beginning while Hadrian is traveling on the barge was fun and ultimately a good reveal. Gwen's story is hard to read, but at the end of the day very satisfying. Royce is a little too obstinate, but it does make the end scene very emotional, it actually touched me in my feels a bit. Overall, a very enjoyable beginning to this dynamic duo.
Hadrian and Royce meet for the 1st time. Makes me look forward to reading more of this series

This book was great. I was afraid I wasn’t going to enjoy this as much as the first trilogy as this is a prequel and the main series ended phenomenally— but this was so well written and I absolutely loved seeing the beginnings of Riyria. Also I did not see the twist coming in the last chapter at all- that was a surprise for sure, but a welcome one.
