This book was more powerful after reading Riyira Revelations. I love Royce and Hadrian so learning how they met was fun. And I have a new respect for Gwen. Definitely recommend if you read Revelations.

An excellent foray back into the world of Royce and Hadrian. I loved seeing how the pieces came together in this quest. The nods to Revelations were really entertaining.
Coming back to Sullivan’s work always feels like a warm hug (albeit a bit dirty and emotional at times.)

An outstanding novel about three cast-offs from society, an ex-soldier, an orphaned thief, and a prostitute who navigate their way through life to find on another. Michael J. Sullivan has quickly become one of my favorite authors and I have enjoyed every book he has written and eagerly await anything else he puts his name to. If you like fantasy books, this one is a definite 'don't miss'. I also enjoy his use of lighter tone and less gloom in his stories. There are still stories of hardship and loss, but they don't have to set in a desolate hellscape to get the job done. He balances great story, very powerful characters (especially the women in his books) as well as exciting adventures. We need more authors like this around.

This was alright. Heavy on the world building, which is not a bad thing, a bit boring but necessary.
Dialogue and character interactions come across as childish at times, particularly Roy and Hadrian's "arguments". Lots of school playground "my dad is better than yours" type of conversations. Which is strange coming from a killing machine and an unbeatable warrior.
I really enjoyed Gwen's storyline and would probably drop this series if it weren't for her. Also, I'm ever so slightly intrigued by the revelations at the end.
Given that this was mostly world building, I'm going to read the second book then decide if it's worthy.

Very well-written and compelling, curious to see where this is going!
Definitely best read after Revelations, or secondary character motivations will not make much sense. Still a great adventure even if you start with it, though.
Like so many other readers, I was so enamored with the Riyria Revelations (all 6 novels) that I didn’t want it to end. Of course, the ending was pretty much perfect though so I didn’t want that to be ruined by sequels. We’ve all loved TV series that are great through 4 or 5 seasons only to be run into the ground with another 3 or 4 seasons. I’m so glad Mr. Sullivan decided to offer up a couple of prequel novels instead. It allows us to keep on experiencing the characters and the world but not upset the story itself.
The Crown Tower is a nice chance to come back into the world before the events of the Riyria Revelations. In many ways this is an origin story in that it covers the period of time when Royce and Hadrian meet. Some readers may prefer to read this first, just so they can progress chronologically, but I’m glad I read it in publication order. It’s always cool to see how people and events came to be and read about adventures which will have major impacts on what you already know is coming.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It’s one of those books that you read for pure fun and to get that warm fuzzy feeling you get when you really enjoy the experience. I want to dive right into the next one right now…but I won’t. [b:The Rose and the Thorn|17163514|The Rose and the Thorn (The Riyria Chronicles, #2)|Michael J. I’ll read a few other books of different genres, always knowing I have one more Riyria book to come back to. But I won’t be able to hold out for long…
