I know that this is a prequel but I had a bit of a hard time staying interested, especially since one of the overarching themes is predestined events. Gwen was my favorite character, I hope she plays a big role in the next books.

Pretty rote fantasy, but not without charm. This prequel feels like it is probably not the best place to jump into the series; I imagine the original books are a better starting point.
The narrative is split between a generic fantasy adventure which, even in-universe, feels deeply contrived; and the tale of a group of prostitutes setting up their own brothel. The latter of these is significantly more engaging than the former! There is one particularly scene where they have to go to apply for a business licence that is tenser than any of the action scenes in the book.
Overall, competent and engaging but forgettable.

I'm so glad I read the Riyira Revelations series before this one. This whole world is phenomenal. Sullivan is an amazing writer. The characters jump off the page and the plot is engaging and fast paced. I'm so glad I get more of Royce and Hadrian! ❤️
