Not as good as the Lindsey Davis novels. These novels just don't have the humor (although they have a little). The book gets a little dry in the middle with Brunetti doing things but not getting anywhere. The endings are not as filled with pizzazz (yes, i used pizzazz) as they should be.
Plenty of satisfying plot twists as Brunetti unravels a mystery set in the glass factories of Murano.
Another meh mystery from Donna Leon. Spoilers below:
This book focuses on the issue of pollution. One is pollution from industrial complexes in Marghera. Not really sure what they are except that the waste products are flushed into the lagoon and nothing is being done because of corruption or connections. This part is really done as a side topic.
The second is pollution from glass making factories on the island of Murano which has been going on for generations. In the past the waste products have simply been flushed into the water but there are now regulations which make the factories recover the toxins and have them disposed of properly.
And the book gets into this because a night watchman at a glass factory in Murano is killed. The mystery itself and various subplots are either abandoned or clumsily ended in the book.
As a mystery this gets a 1 or 2 star. As an expose to the various polluting industries in Venice it gets a 3 star at best. Not one of Leon's best books.
