Jamaica Inn was terrific. It made my skin prickle a lot, especially in the beginning and towards the end.

I love how strong Mary is (I always love it when the protagonist is strong and resilient). She’s brave and never forgets her morals. I really like how she chose to stay at the inn, even though she wanted to leave, only so that Patience wouldn’t be alone.

I hated Joss in general but I respect the fact that he didn’t let any of the smugglers touch Mary.
The relationship between Jem and Mary was weird to me. He was Joss’s brother, and I couldn’t help picturing him under the same light as Joss.

My favorite thing about the book was the “woman” character. I LOVED that. How Mary always argued with that voice in her head about what she should do. THAT was an idea of a genius. Especially when Mary and Bassat were trying to figure out who killed Joss and Patience, I loved how Mary went back and forth with “woman” and tried to decide if she should mention Jem or not.

That plot twist was really good. I never suspected Dayes to be the puppeteer.

I also liked how realistic the story line was, how Aunt Patience knew she was in a deep predicament but she didn’t know how to leave. Classic abusive relationship, and probably very common.

But my ending was my favorite scene out of all of them. I like how Mary wanted to go back to the home she grew up, but decided last minute she would leave with Jem. It was bold and reckless and everything she wasn’t in the beginning of the story.

I ALSO really liked how Mary suddenly grew “irritated” at “woman” when she warned her of what she’d be leaving behind if she went with Jem. She stopped doubting herself and was ready to let that part of her go.

But the last “interaction” between Mary and “woman” was really nice to read. “Woman” encouraged her instead of trying to dissuade her, and I still don’t know what to make of that. It was a truly beautiful ending.

She could really fucking write eh. Really struck me that the threat of sexual assault runs throughout without ever being mentioned directly even once.

I'm not a fan of angry, creepy men as villains so didn't enjoy the plot that much. Daphne du Maurier is masterful in building an eery atmosphere and her writing is beautiful, so the reading experience wasn't bad at all.

adventurous dark

Had a Jane Eyre feel to it, but much darker, and definitely more depressing. I enjoyed the mystery and suspense. I'm still trying to process the ending and figure out how I feel about it. I would probably listen again, but not anytime soon.
