So you know how Clueless is a modern Emma and [movie] is a modern [book]? This book would benefit from the Netflix limited series treatment of it set in its written time or totally moved forward. Our heroine, through cruel fate and a promise to her dead mom, moves to Jamaica Inn to live with her Aunt. When we arrive, we find the once-freespirited aunt trembling under the thumb of her creepy, violent husband. The husband's creepier friends show up at the bar (the epynomous Jamaica Inn), and after our heroine retires for the night she witnesses them up to all sorts of criminal acts. What is a girl to do!? Especially after she meets her uncle's little brother...
Perfect moody book to read in October.
An extra half-star for the inclusion of Cornish pasties :)

I love Daphne du Maurier’s writing so much! It’s so evocative and compelling, and certain scenes were so adrenaline inducing that it felt like I was watching a scary film. Mary Yellan is an excellent main character and the setting of Jamaica Inn and the moors is superb. The story is much more gruesome and dark than I’d expected but it pulled me in entirely.
You have to remember this book was written in 1936 by a woman which in itself it a wonderful thing, and the characters and story for the time were very progressive. The heroine Mary, was head strong and brave. The story had darkness and mystery with some decent plot twists. I really enjoyed it.

Such a compelling read. I couldn’t put it down. Du Maurier is the queen of the anxious, unknown threat. Cornwall and Bodmin Moor are chillingly evoked-makes me want to visit (although I’ve been warned that Jamaica Inn is now in a lay-by off the A30).
