My first Paula Hawkins book. I liked it. The narrator was great! Swearing. Not for teens.

Quick fun read! Like a lot of these, I figured out most of it but there is one final surprise at the very end.

4 stars may be generous, but I was  pleasantly surprised with how much I liked this book. I’ve never actually heard of Paula Hawkins and I really only put this on cause it was on my shelf for some reason and I’d just finished a book I loved so much that I needed something easier I didn’t care about so much as a break. I wouldn’t say I’m an avid reader of crime drama and I’m not one to be dissuaded  by predictability. But the cast of characters and themes throughout this book I found compelling. I particularly enjoyed the commentary on storytelling and the crime/mystery genre.

This one didn't do anything for me. The one good thing I'll say about it is that Hawkins does a good job connecting all the characters to one other, but I thought the writing was incredibly dull and even pretentious at times. But most importantly I just didn't like any of the characters and couldn't have cared less about them. I've read plenty of books before with complicated, messed up characters, but I'm usually able to empathize with them despite their issues. But in this book I felt no empathy, just irritation.

Also- regarding Daniel, I really think Hawkins should have fleshed out his character more. I don't really have an opinion on whether or not he murdered Ben because we only get a few glimpses of him.
