Gideon “Eagle” Carpenter is recovering from some serious wounds when he hears a woman laugh that instantly catches his attention and erases the darkness of his past. . Laurel “Rory” Chappel is a nomad who is used to keeping people at a distance but she can’t keep away from Gideon.
While I have had some issues with Feehan’s recent series, this series has always been one that I get excited to read. Sadly, this one did not hold up to the previous books in this series. First, the romance between Gideon and Rory is really lacking. They are attracted to each other but their relationship was extremely slow and didn’t really have a lot of steam, like the majority of the couples in this series. I think this romance was the weakest of the series which makes me a bit concerned about future books.
This book was a bit different from the previous books as well because there wasn’t any threat from Whitney, no terrorists or extreme missions, and no one really after the Ghostwalkers. There is a threat against Rory and her other friends who live in her building but it wasn’t related to anything Ghostwalker, which is unusual for this series. Because the threat wasn't Ghostwalker related, we barely get to spend any time with the rest of Gideon’s team, which was disappointing because that is one of my favorite parts of this series.
Gideon and Rory have an extremely slow relationship that is mostly them being apart from each other due to Rory’s skittishness and Gideon’s actions. I liked both of these characters but their relationship wasn’t very interesting since it involved a lot of repeated conversations of trusting each other, breaking said trust, and discussions of their pasts. It just got a bit boring overall and I found myself skimming conversations when they started to have repeated themes.
While I did enjoy this book overall, this was definitely my least favorite couple and their story was a bit anticlimactic. I hope the next book is good but at this point I am a little apprehensive of any Feehan book.

Another great addition to this series. It’s a strange thing this author does to give us new entries to the series seemingly at random. We might be mired with one team in one book, gagging to get the stories of other members of that team, and then she drags us to the next book in the series and it has absolutely nothing to do with the books of the people we’ve been following. Here, I would have preferred it if we had continued with Team 1 or 2 or at least had interactions with them. This book featured an urban Ghostwalker team including Rory, one of Whitney’s original orphaned girls that were experimented on, who had managed to suppress the incident. After meeting Gideon and having an unexpected but mutually fiery attraction to him, Rory has to figure out a way to get herself and her new friends out of danger, which becomes doubly difficult when she finds out she may not be able to trust him.<br /><br />I overall enjoyed this slow burn of a story which says a lot given that I think there were some continuity issues and things that didn’t quite make sense. For example, the Rory’s lack of a childhood plot where we never even get to know her earliest memory till the end, or the fact that one minute Gideon is struggling to heal, the next he’s next to full strength. Or the open use of Ghostwalker skills in front of civilians. Or certain plot points kind of being a little flimsy. And yet this was still a compelling read and I struggled to put it down. There was a lot of chemistry in this but no actual intimacy till the very last scene which by CF’s recent standards is mind-blowing…. But I don’t think this suffered from a lack of spice and I think if anything, it allowed for the development of a strong, emotional storyline and characters I really got to know and like. Can’t wait for the next books in the series and whichever unrelated Ghostwalker team CF decides to toss us into.
