Really really compelling entanglement of modern characters, motivations, and politics. It felt like such a treat to witness this kind of smooth yet complex storytelling. As someone who recently visited NZ, it was really cool to see Southland as this seemingly mundane setting for a sinister and tragic unraveling of lives. I really enjoyed the descriptions of characters’ changing relationships and perceptions of one another as the plot evolved. I can see why this is being called Shakespearean in the use of dramatic irony, which really got me worked up!! Damn good story.

A pageturner. Liked the multi perspective approach and there was some spiky satire on all sides, ending didn't quite land for me but I was hooked to the last page

I don’t usually read thrillers but bought this on the recommendation of the assistant in Waterstones. It was quite a slow burn, but then the tension really mounts in the last quarter of the book.
Plenty of strong female characters - I’d said to the lady in Waterstones that I didn’t want the women as victims, which is what puts me off thrillers.
A good read!

This book made me think more than others I’ve read. It started out very slow and picked up pace as it went.

Definitely not a book for me, because I don't really enjoy Everyone's The Asshole scenarios. At the same time I was riveted by the meandering plot slowly racheting up tension. I would absolutely have liked the last third of the book to deal with the last few pages and beyond, but in a way it's rewarding to read something that leaves you very vividly picturing whatever happens after the book ends.
