This book feels like it’s trying to hard to be poetic. It goes on and on with the occasional original phrase buried underneath cliches about life and love. The lack of quotation marks is a bit irritating. There’s not much plot, but there’s really not much character development either. I didn’t feel like I understood or cared about any of the characters. Ulysses’ obsessions with Captain Darnley and Peg make no sense. The imagery of Florence is pleasant but gets old after 400 pages. There’s so many references to paintings and people that I stopped caring to look them up or know if they were real or the author’s imagination (why she came up with any of it wasn’t clear since it didn’t really add much, name dropping). Occasionally there’s a funny line or a touching moment but that a book does not make.
