WOW! Just finished. That was one **** of a plot. I definitely recommend reading this book.

This book is F@#$ing amazing!

I have been searching for an author that can provide a suspenseful and thrilling murder mystery. Linwood Barclay exceeded this, the plot development kept me obsessed the entire read. I especially loved the way the author described the characters and and as the plot developed so did the characters.

Linwood Barclay has easily become my favorite author and I've only read one book by him. I cannot wait to read more about the universe the author created called Promise Falls.

Talk about a thrilling read! I'd give this one 4.5 stars and would be lying if I called it anything less than excellent.

In Promise Falls, a triple homicide takes place one evening next door to the Cutter's abode. No one heard or saw what happened to the Langley's, but everyone is assuming it had something to do with Albert's job as the town's criminal attorney. As the book progresses, we learn that everyone in this town seems to have a secret, but the largest secrets seem to lie within the Cutter's own family. Throw in a corrupt mayor and a pompous college president and you have a recipe for a suspenseful read to keep you up all night.

I wanted to read this in one sitting but, alas, life happens and doesn't always allow that. :) Honestly, if it weren't for the slightly cheesy dialogue of Derek Cutter, the teenage son, in the prologue and a few other similar snippets, this book would have gotten a 5 star rating from me (although I feel I'm being a little picky). I found Ellen Cutter's character a little difficult to like, even after all the tension is resolved, but I think that added to the story for me. I did slightly wish we got to know the Langley family more through back telling of stories or something similar. Overall, this was a fantastic read and would recommend to anyone looking for a quick read. I'll definitely be looking into more [a:Linwood Barclay|458771|Linwood Barclay|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1418584169p2/458771.jpg] novels immediately.

Just as entertaining as I expected, this fast-paced mystery kept me reading.
Set in a small town in upstate New York, this mystery begins with a family, the Langleys, shot to death in their own home. Nearby neighbors Jim and Ellen Cutter and their son Derek become more involved in the crime than they expected at first. Derek was friends with Adam Langley and it turns out he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Past indiscretions are dredged up in the search for the truth about the murders, and Jim isn't sure who he should trust.
From the corrupt mayor to the conniving college president, there are plenty of interesting characters.

Derek Cutter is looking forward to spending some alone time with his girlfriend in his best friend’s empty house while they are out of town on vacation. Unfortunately, his friend’s mom gets sick and they return home. While Derek listens from the basement in horror, the Langleys are murdered. There appears to be no motive for the crime and the police arrest 17-year-old Derek as their only suspect. Jim and Ellen Cutter, Derek’s parents, are horrified. Jim has dropped out of the corporate rat race and now mows lawns for a living; Ellen runs the annual literary festival at the local college. How well do you know your neighbors? What is going on in their lives that might spill over into yours? Or vice-versa? This engaging thriller will keep you on the edge of your seat as Jim works to free Derek by investigating the town’s secrets as well as his wife’s.

This was a solid thriller that I zipped through over Thanksgiving break. The crime (and how it was witnessed) was chilling, and Barclay keeps the suspense going with a lot of twists and turns. You can try to put the puzzle pieces together yourself, but don't be surprised if you're wrong! Yet it still all makes sense. I thought the portrayal of small town and academic politics was decently accurate, though the mayor is a bit over-the-top. Jim is a likable protagonist, though quite stubborn. Barclay is an author I enjoy and intend to keep reading!

My first thriller/murder mystery and I really enjoyed it! I don't know if it was because the son, Derek, was a teenager but I couldn't put this down!

A solid book by Barclay, again set in Promise Falls. I like the way his stories take ordinary people who get caught up in extraordinary circumstances and try to find a way out. This story continues with some familiar characters, the sleazy mayor, the town cop, and the poor guy that keeps getting caught up in every weird happening in town. :)

A quick mystery, not TOO hard to figure out the culprit, but still with a twist or two in the story.

Meh, it was okay. The first half really irritated me and the second half, while more enjoyable was too obvious.

I didn't particularly like any of the characters.
