I really liked the story overall. The idea of a sentient wood is not new, but this story takes it in a different direction from what I expected. I'll have to check out the other books in the series.

Uf...

Wonderful story, very original and yet familiar in a comfortable way; somewhat reminiscent of Tolkien.

There were snippets here that took my breath away the way LOTR and Silmarillion had. I wish the whole book was about the hunters and the ancient sorceress and all the bronze-age people. But the story revolved around a mythical forest, which would be fascinating, if it weren't presented through the POV of the main character/narrator whose depth and appeal was that of a plastic straw. Shame, no editor helped Holdstock to flesh out his main character. For a long time I couldn't even remember his name. Only toward the end it stuck with me as I cheered him on: 'Die Steve, for the love of God die.' A few narrow-minded fools call this book misogynistic. Ignore them. The story only had three human characters. It would be a completely different story line if these characters were women. Holdstock's only fault is his inability to write realistic characters. Though strangely enough Steven's brother Christian captured my interest as did most of the characters even if they only occupied two sentences in the book. I would rather follow any of these characters than the cowardly Steven Straw.

This in part reminds me of the book of koli, for the dense woods, fear of the unknown, isolation and eventual exploration into the woods and in part Bridge to Terribithia with Steve's early encounters with the elfin type elementals.

At the same time, it was entirely unique, but deeply inspired by the Celtic and Norse Myths and Legends.

What a fantastic piece of literature this was.
I was captivated by the very first instance. The magic and science of the mythago was so clever and so specific I can't begin to imagine how Holdstock came up with it all.
It was a complex system, but not one that lack sense and logic, and because it was believable, it made the magic of it all even more fantastic.

I loved the first person narrative because it let me see deeper into the psyche at different, crucial points - especially interesting when the mythago hallucinations first begin. It was also fascinating to see how Guiwenneth was a connecting character to many, the initial main quest focus, but out of this, much more was explored. It was great to see Steven's character expand more too, as we was delivered with challenges along the way.

Overall, this was a great novel. Its one I suspected I'd enjoy bit didn't realise I'd be fond of to this level!

To here there are more books that expand this world futher, has me very excited.

Pick it up, give it a go and enjoy! >(^_^)<
