I found the writing beautifully descriptive and loved the concept of the mythago wood. Unfortunately I felt like the world building really took a backseat as the 16ish year old female character gets introduced, and not because we learn a lot about her or because her story becomes a focus but more because the older men in the story are sexually obsessed with her childish yet strong body and pungent woody female smells? I made it through the whole book by trying to keep in mind that the female character is part of the forest and so the male facination with her could be seen as a aspect of her magical nature- idk. Ultimately I can't get passed both how boring and icky the love story is (if you can even call it that), and was disapointed that the characters don't really develop- they only age and maybe go slightly mad - which could have been cool if fleshed out more but nope- we clearly needed more pages describing a child's erotic scent instead aaaaaah

A great concept, taking fantasy and blending it with horror. It's genre-bending and time-bending. A period piece that takes a sharp turn into haunting fantasy. It turns in ways you don't see coming and leaves you haunted by it for years to come. Highly recommended!

I just couldn't get into this story about a family that becomes obsessed with a world they have created and is now out to destroy them. Up until the final 1/4 of the book I was thinking 3 stars, but I just really lost interest towards the end. Sign. Another Modern Library book that just wasn't too great.
