This book was not mandatory reading during my school days, but now that I've read it I wish it had been.

I think everyone has heard of Animal Farm or at least the themes of the story; the idea that a revolution isn't a solution in itself and that the people who overthrow the first tyrant easily can become tyrants themselves.

The story isn't very complicated. The animals overthrow their cruel human master, they work together at first and then things go down hill as one of them decides he wants power. The plot isn't hard to follow, it's very much a fairy tale in that sense. And I think that's what makes this story so good, because it allows you to focus on the message.

This story is a good reminder of all the horrible lies we as people are able to tell and believe. How history is something written by individuals and how the people in charge can choose what is true or not, for future generations to remember. It's a good, straightforward reminder of the importance of critical thinking, the importance of learning from history and of how a violent solution risks leading to more violence.

The message of this book isn't that fighting for justice is useless, as far as I've understood. It's just a reminder of the importance of critical thinking, and I think the world always needs a reminder of that, especially now in the age of endless information.
