Although Eva Ibbotson's The Secret of Platform 13 is the more well-known novel, I've always felt it's completely overrated. This, in my opinion, is her real work of genius. I read it repeatedly as a child and loved it more each time, finding great new aspects I'd missed each time. Now, many years later, it's still as adorable and enjoyable, with a complex plot, highly unique characters that grow on you, and a mystical, fantastical tone that anyone will love. Ibbotson demonstrates her great talent at plot twists as well in this great book! My one minor complaint is that she does spend a little too much time directly describing each character (your typical paragraph blurb, giving a physical description), and that's something that always disturbs my reading and my imagination in general.

4/22/19 Review:
WHY ISN'T THERE A FUNCTION FOR ME TO REVIEW THIS BOOK TWICE? C'man Goodreads.
Anyway, I was raving about this book to my mom and told her how I wanted to read it again. She actually pushed me to do it and I'm so glad I did! This book was absolutely as good as I remembered it to be. It was in the children's section of the library (embarrassing :')...especially since it has chocolate stains or something in it), but it reads like a classic. Something like James and the Giant Peach or something equally appealing to all ages. Ibbotson is very funny and the story is both whimsical and horrific, but also super outlandish and fun. ANYWAY, I love it. Good book. On my all time fave list.

HEHE. Oh man. This was my favorite book in fifth grade. That part about that witch who made the rats eat each other used to drive me insane. Fantastically written and whimsical. I can't help but smile when remembering it.

This was one of my absolute favorites when I was little...dark wizard holding a tournament for potential brides? Hell yes. I reread this recently thinking it couldn't possibly be as great as I remembered, but it was!!! Highly recommend to all baby goths (or grown goths who want their black hearts to spin up in a haze of slightly-grotesque mist and sprout happy bat wings).
A fun read - silly and sweet, and yes, charming.
I should just start writing "CHARMING" ten times in a row for all of my Ibbotson reviews. I can't seem to come up with another word for her. She's charming and delightful. Go read her.
My work here is done.

I loved this book as a kid, and still love it as an adult.
The writing is so clever, the story is original, and I highly recommend it.
