Exhaustive. Discussion of reconstruction was especially good-the detail pays off here.
Chernow always falls a little in love with his subjects.

I love Chernow's style, immense detail, and research. Grant was certainly an enigma, and this book delved into parts of his life that I did not know much about.

As good as you can get for a long dense book about a president. Author does a great job of making the parts he can feel like a story instead of a text book. Also did admit Grant's fault, instead of only portraying him as an American hero.

Known primarily as the general who accepted Lee's surrender at Appomattox, Ulysses Grant, in the hands of Ron Chernow, moves through his varied history as a man fully alive, capable of reaching into the future to influence a still troubled nation.

Typical of the scholarly work presented by Chernow, this was a delight to read and learn from. Grant is presented as a General, President, but also as a human, which is very affecting, and effective. I really enjoyed the timline, and the depth allowed for learning about the foils, and the strengths of Grant's character.
