I’m doing a complete reread of this series so this is my second time reading this book. I don’t recall anything about the first time, but this time was a slog.

Dorian seems an okay character in most of the other books. Troubled, sure, but working through it. But in this book, where he’s one of the main characters, he becomes completely unlikeable, his personality just a toxic stew of anger, aggression and possessiveness.

At least partly because of this, the central relationship is not at all believable. But worse, for a supposed romance book, the “romance” is completely absent. It’s mind boggling and frankly disturbing that any woman would find Dorian attractive with the way he acts in this book.

Hopefully I remember to leave this one out of any future rereads of the series. Yikes.

Fantastic addition to the series. I love this couple! Dorian is one of my favorites so I was glad to see him get a story. We have some different things coming into play that I think will be fleshed out as the series continues so that keeps things interesting instead of regurgitated villains with new couples. Glad to see the humans coming into play a little bit.

The world building in this book was fabulous and the plot was well thought out. I enjoyed the banter between MCs most of the time. The FMC was strong, fierce, and protective with an impressive ability to adapt. The MMC was not very adaptable and that stunted much of his character growth.
I wanted to like this book more, but it was repetitive. The author filled internal dialogue and narration with reiterations of previous statements and ideas. She especially overused “male” and “female”. I understood their genders early on, I don’t need a descriptor every few minutes.
Overall, well written book.

Spice: 2.5/5

Triggers: child abduction, mention of child abuse, murder, violence/gore
