So etwas habe ich noch nie gelesen! Es ist sehr politisch, Anti-amerikanisch und sehr wissenschaftlich. Man muss dem Buch sehr viel Zeit geben um sich zu entwickeln, aber dann hat es mich so gepackt! Der Hammer! Ich liebe es! Ich würde es aber nicht unbedingt als Thriller beschreiben.

The one main takeaway of Genocide of One appears to be that modern man is truly awful. The picture Mr. Takano paints of mankind is just plain ugly. In fact, his version of mankind is one step above that of primates. To make things worse, he is not gentle about descriptions of brutality. In fact, there are some of the worst scenes of cruelty one will ever read. They are stomach-churning, nightmare-inducing, explicit, vivid, and not easy to erase from one’s memory. His view is so bleak that it tends to distract a reader from the rest of the story.
As for the rest of the story, it is a mash-up of politico-science thriller and textbook. The science portions are also brutal but in a completely different manner. While the explanations are necessary given the technical details of the plot, they are not simple to understand. Filled with intricate technical jargon and advanced laboratory methods, it is not just dry but exceedingly difficult. In fact, they are the kind of scenes that will turn readers off from continuing the story because they are too technical. Nor are they well-explained. This could easily be the fault of the translation, but the fact of the matter is that these are trying scenes that test the patience of the most erudite reader.
It is not that Genocide of One is a bad story. The action is intense, and the theory it posits is rather ground-breaking. It is a story bound in negativity though, and that proves very taxing. Neither is it a pro-American novel, as it is deeply critical of American politicians and spycraft. Mr. Takano tries to end the novel on a hopeful note, but readers are so thoroughly disenfranchised that they will no longer care. In an attempt to be a cautionary tale about the presumptions of modern man, Genocide of One becomes a slog of a novel that disgusts, distracts, and disturbs rather than educates, entertains, or enlightens.

Good mix of action, science and political intrigue. Some of the writing is clunky, but it's a translation.

Mir wurde freundlicherweise das Buch als Rezensionsexemplar von Randomhouse zur Verfügung gestellt.
Leider kam ich erst gegen Mitte des Buches wirklich in die Handlung rein. In den ersten Kapitel geschieht nicht viel und man lernt ziemlich viel über die einzelnen Charaktere kennen. Erst nach und nach erfährt man wie die einzelnen Handlungsstränge miteinander verknüpft sind und man wird somit mit genügend Hintergrundwissen versorgt um die Handlung nachvollziehen zu können.
Das Thema "Völkermord" finde ich sehr interessant und es ist auch gut umgesetzt.
Die Handlung kommt glaubwürdig rüber und man merkt wie viel recherchiert wurden ist. Die Dialoge sind auch schlüssig und durch die Fachsprache wirkt das ganze sehr glaubwürdig. Es ist ein Actionbuch und teils sind die Beschreibungen doch ziemlich eklig. Jedoch sind die Beschreibungen ziemlich knapp, das heißt man kann diese ganz leicht überspringen. Ich finde es übrigens gut, dass das ganze nicht schön dargestellt wird. Der Kongokrieg ist einfach nur extrem grausam und deshalb sollte er auch in all seiner Grausamkeit dargestellt werden.
Zwischendurch hatte man richtig gemerkt, dass das Buch vom Englischen ins Deutsche übersetzt wurde. Deshalb waren an manchen Stellen die Ausdrücke doch sehr eigenartig und es schien so, als wäre etwas während der Übersetzung verloren gegangen.
Durch das springen zwischen den einzelnen Schauplätzen ist es teils schwer am Ball zu bleiben. Jedoch braucht man die jeweiligen Informationen um die Entscheidungen von den Charakteren nachvollziehen zu können. Auch wirken die Charaktere teils zu stereotypisch, aber alles andere wäre wahrscheinlich bei so einer komplexen Handlung nicht angebracht.Die beiden Hauptprotagonisten Yeager und Kento wickeln sich im Laufe des Buches weiter und sie sind mir beide deshalb auch sehr sympathisch geworden.
Fazit: Alles in allem ist es ein sehr schönes Buch. Man sollte sich nur vorm Lesen bewusst sein, dass es kein einfaches Buch ist. Ein Buch zum Thema Völkermord liest man nicht nebenbei zum entspannen und ich habe teils auch das Buch auf Seite legen müssen.

So, here's the deal. The half of this book that was straight thriller, race against the clock to save a new human species against nefarious bad guys with weird science stuff, was pretty good. I would give that four stars. But, and this is a big but, the other half of this book that was blah blah blah about humans fighting and their propensity for war and violence? That got way super heavy-handed morally at points and holy shit, the Burns guy as president? Just fucking call him Bush, it was so incredibly blatant that I almost didn't want to finish the book. The average of four stars and "didn't want to finish" is two stars.
