Not what I expected. An incredibly well written book. Very heavy and utterly realistic.

How to review this, I've read stellar reviews and don't think I can do justice. But let me try my hand and see how this goes.
I'm 18, and not an avid war book reader. Nor historical fiction reader. I stuck to fantasy most my life and have been branching out. So I can't compare this to other war books, because I haven't read any others. Unless you count fantasy wars...
I could really sympathize with the characters, even though I'd never experienced anything like it, at least not word by word. But a lot of the stories, were stripped and for me, the emotions sometimes were just so relatable and I could really imagine myself there. There was no intentional war-glorifying moments and I felt like that's what made it so special. It was just a true, emotional retelling of what Tim O'Brien felt like was the Vietnam war as an average liberal arts inclined guy, drafted into a war he didn't know about, and end up being foot solider.

This book is less about the facts of the war, and more about what war feels like. It’s a really powerful book for how it captures the complexity  of what O’Brien experienced.

Gory and bad language at times, but what else do you expect with soldiers in war. An eye opener. My favorite chapters were "Stockings", "Church", and the last one (don't remember what it's called).

A well written book that is an organized connection of scattered thoughts about the author’s time serving in Vietnam.  This isn’t about telling you specifics regarding the war.  There’s not a lot of historical retelling going on here at all, but rather recollections of memories and feelings.  While that could lead to a colossal misfire, O’Brien does a great job of expressing what goes on in his mind when he thinks back on Vietnam.  There’s joy, melancholy, nostalgia, and hatred here in a way that’s unique and powerful.  Overall this isn’t really the kind of book I love, but I recognize good writing and applaud him for his work.

I wish I weren't so torn about a book that's so clearly become a classic...

On the one hand, I truly (truly) appreciate an insightful account of what it FELT like to be a soldier in 'Nam. My dad was in Vietnam, and this book makes me wish I'd read it before he died last year. There's so much value here.

But I was also wishing for more about the war itself. I wanted more about what it was like to BE there - not just what it was like be someone who was there. This is an introspective, personal book that's worth reading.

It's not really a war story.

I suppose that my rating is a little bit unfair - after all, why do my expectations matter? The book should be evaluated on its merit, not on what I think it should have been about.

Alas. Preference.

Read it, regardless.
