What tries to be a new mythology retelling just ends up as a typical YA fantasy that takes place in Ancient Greece and recycles characters that have been around for years.

This wasn't what I expected but I'm not disappointed!! It was great <3

I really wanted to give this book the full writing but there were a few little things that bothered me. The biggest one: the pace was a little bit off at times. There were some times were literal hours has passed in the time of one paragraph. I really appreciated it fast-paceness but it could have been done more smoothly when a scene passed into another. Also, I could leave without Pip's POV tbh but this let us know my aromantic queen Temi better so I'm not complaining.

(Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review)

A Veil of Gods and Kings is a reimagining of Apollo and Hyacinth set in a fantasy world inspired by Greek mythology.

The characters are the driving point in this book, and I love them all dearly. Still, I would have loved to see a lot more worldbuilding, as the places and culture felt kinda flat :/

The book also has little to no plot, focusing mostly on Apollo and Hyacinth’s hate to love story, as well as Epiphany’s (Hyacinth’s sister) life as a princess wanting to escape her life. Though the end strongly implied that we’d see more action in the next book so I can’t wait to see the story continue in the sequel!! (I’m also crossing my fingers for a Temi pov in it)

If you’re a fellow Greek mythology fan and like character-driven books, I highly recommend A Veil of Gods and Kings!!

Have we had enough Greek mythology retellings? No, we absolutely have not. And it’s not quite that anyway, is it? The Author’s Note before the story describes this as not a retelling, but a book inspired by a Greek myth that pulls from many ancient cultures. The world-building itself is entirely new to this story.

A Veil of Gods and Kings follows young godling Apollo prior to his ascension as he’s tasked by his entirely unlikable father Zeus to mentor under the industrious Prince Hyacinth (“my friends call me Cyn”) of Niria in hopes of instilling Apollo with a more agreeable disposition. Apollo and Cyn’s younger sisters, Temi and Epiphany (Pip) respectively, feature prominently as the secondary plotline with Pip rounding out the third viewpoint throughout the book. Written in the first person following Apollo, Hyacinth, and Pip, A Veil of Gods and Kings takes place largely within the Kingdom of Niria with most scenes occurring within the castle grounds.

All in all, I really did enjoy the read and plan to read the next book. Fans of both Simon Snow and The Song of Achilles will like this series as well.
