Another brilliantly enjoyable book by Dana Swartz. A good conclusion to the first novel which continues to explore and expand on the themes brought by the first part.
I felt it was not as well rounded a narrative as the first and a little superficial at points but still well worth a read

It's considered a YA book, but I would suggest more geared towards an older teen crowd.

Fun continuation of this alternative history world, but the writing isn’t as strong as the first. Some of the plot gets a bit hand wavey and repetitive as the author tries to wrap it up. Still an enjoyable read.

DONT READ IF YOU DONT LIKE SPOILERS....

I really wish the ending wasn't good in the last book because the ending of the last book is what made me decided to just read this one. I wish I didnt to be honest. I dont mean to be harsh but I just didn't like it. I wanted to. It sounded like a book. I would love to read but I just didn't like it at all. Spoilers ahead...

First off it started really slow. You kind of know Jack is alive and kind of don't. I just didn't like Hazels wishy wash attitude when it came to him. She said she was hopelessly in love with him. Then she's all attracted to someone else and kissing him. I get that she didn't owe anything to Jack but if you say you feel so much for someone and are supposed to be so in love yet turn around and kiss the next handsome guy at least set it up where she's ready to move on or something. It was portrayed like she was so in love with him and couldn't live with out him and she never wanted to be with anyone else. It just got on my nerves in the book.

The story in the middle picked up for me when Jack was brought back. But even then when we saw what happen to him and the reason he didn't reach out to Hazel and just stole her horse. He didn't even have the best reason to just leave her. I mean I get he didn't want to say bye to her just wanted to give up on her becausehe was "immorta". But why write a letter saying he's waiting for her? He just guessed she would think he was dead? That didn't make any sense to me.

Also I didn't get it in the last book still don't get it now but why is making out in a grave yard next to a dead body like a thing for them? I just couldn't see like - ya let's kiss and get hot and heavy here next to a dead person. That was just a strange part of the book.

The part about the some gifted and famous society of immortal people just pulling the strings of the governments of the world. Was a bit quarky it was interesting in a way I guess but when she says at the end she will never be like that. Ya okay, (you cant see it obviously but my eyes are rolling lol) if you have no accountability what would keep you from justifying your actions like they did and saying it was for the good of the people. Especially if you live forever. It seems to me everyone that took the elixir was pretty much the same. They all seemed to justify harming people here and there for the supposed good of the rest of the people. I just think Hazel hasn't lived long enough to say she wouldn't ever be tempted to do that. Like isn't black and white like that. I would hope she could keep her word I just don't think its likely given human nature.

There are also some heavy triggers in here that I wish I knew about. Like mentions of abortion and miscarriage. There is also graphic details of surgeries and such. So it has a bit of gor to it. It also has mentions of sex not completely graphic but there are mentions of nudity. There is also mentions of female  chest nudity in a caught in the act part of the book. I feel like in these cases this should be marked as upper YA/NA science fiction section. But that's just my opinion. It's all just my opinion lol.

I really wish I could have liked these books.
