Croak by Gina Damico was one of my surprise favourites earlier this year. It was fun, clever, exciting. A perfect recipe for success. Because of my love for Croak I was a bit nervous going into Scorch.Would it live up to the brilliance of the first book? But I should have known better than to worry. Gina's writing has a way of putting you at ease. Letting you lean back and enjoy the ride as she piles on the crazy.

Just like in Croak, the dialogue in this novel was spot on. The conversations felt entirely real and could have easily been happening right in front of me. And because the dialogue was so perfect, the characters really came to life. They had real emotions, relationships and real faults. Even the bad guys were relatable and you just don't see that very often.

Even better than the dialogue was the relationship between Lex and Driggs. They have the perfect partnership. Lex doesn't give up who she is to be with Driggs and vice versa. They treat each other as equals and they work together. It's a beautiful thing! It was nice to see a YA relationship where they trust one another and there's no angsty nonsense. I'm not saying things are perfect all of the time, but it is one hundred percent believable that these two are in love.

There is a lot more action in this book. Partially because it isn`t completely situated in the town of Croak. And although I loved Croak, this was a nice change of pace. The other reason is that there's a lot more danger in this book. The fear is immediate and some really horrible things happen to beloved characters. Gina Damico obviously wasn't afriad to make some hard decisions while writing this book and that really helped set a dramatic, urgent tone in Scorch. And though some parts broke my heart, or made me throw the book across the room, it was a better novel because of it.

Once again Gina Damico has produced a fabulous novel. Funny, creepy, suspensful. An absolute joy to read. If you haven't read this series yet, you're missing out.

Final recommendation: A must for those who like a side of humour with their paranormal. Also recommeded for those who enjoyed the show Dead Like Me.

As someone who absolutely adored every single word of Croak, I couldn't wait to dive into its sequel, Scorch, and was so excited when the book finally came in at my library. And while Scorch turned out to be quite a bit darker than Croak, and took the plot in a direction I wasn't expecting, it wound up being just as good - and in some ways better - than its predecessor.

The thing I really adored in Croak was the absolutely laugh-out-loud funny humor that Damico inserted throughout the book. And while Scorch has its fair share - particularly the lines courtesy of Uncle Mort when referring to Lex and Driggs' relationship - the plot of this one was so much darker than the first that I kind of felt that humor was sort of tempered a bit. There is a lot of danger and intrigue in this book - Zara is on the loose, people are turning up Damned all over the country, and the once-safe town of Croak is no longer safe for anyone, let alone the Junior Grims. Considering that the characters work as Grim Reapers, I was a bit surprised by all the death and destruction! This is not to say that it wasn't well done, of course - this book was, in some ways, more tightly constructed and plotted out than the first, even if it had a much different tone to it - but, again, it was quite a switch from book one and sort of threw me for a loop.

The one person I really came to love in this installment was Elysia, who is, quite simply, an absolutely fabulous character and a wonderful friend to Lex and the others. I feel like we really got to see more of her in this book, and I definitely hope that continues in the third one, because she is a character that really sparkles and shines. I loved her line to Lex about being "exceptionally sticky" (meaning she'll stick to Lex no matter what); she was truly a star in this book, and I adored her to pieces.

Scorch is a wonderful continuation of Lex's story, and definitely sets the series up for one bang of a finale. I can't wait to see what the plot twist at the end means for everyone, and how things will be resolved. There seems to be quite a bit going on that's going to have to be tied up in the final book, and while I can sort of see how things are coming together, I've no doubt that Damico will throw us a few more curves before its all said and done. Needless to say, I can't wait to read Rogue, and shall be waiting impatiently for its release!

WHAT EVEN ARE THESE BOOKS??

Lex and the gang are back, complete with snark overload. Other than that, I literally don't know where to start or really what to say -- I despise Norwood and Heloise, Zara has really gone off the deep end, and I'm not the biggest fan of Ferbus in this book. He really needs to get over himself. Or whatever his issue is.

It was cool getting to see somewhere besides Croak in this book (because as much as I LOVE Croak, when you know there are other cities out there like this one, you naturally want to see them too). I picture DeMyse like the Capitol of Panem:

Also, forewarning you guys: if when you read this book, PLEASE make sure you have [b:Rogue|14290102|Rogue (Croak, #3)|Gina Damico|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1358265424s/14290102.jpg|19931066] ready to go as soon as you're done. I'm thanking the gods I bought both at the same time, because I'm gonna tear through this bitch as soon as I'm done typing this. Overall, prepare to get your heart shredded and your mind fucked.

I didn't love book 1 so I don't think it's a huge shock that I didn't love book 2. I found something things funny but most of the slang and silly remarks were just distracting.

Gina Damico continues to deliver a great world, great characters, and high stakes. In this novel, we got to visit Demise, another Grim city like Croak. It was interesting to compare and contrast the two cities as one was in the boonies and the other was a mix of Las Vegas and New Orleans. While the plot is ongoing from the last book, I felt there were a lot less hints as to "whodunnit" in terms of who had been helping Zara out with her damnings. The reveal is more confusing than causing a revelation, which was a bit of a letdown compared to Croak's reveal. Nonetheless, things are escalating rapidly and we are left on a cliffhanger ending!
