Reacher is in Portland, Oregon when he gets a request for help from a former member of the elite squad he ran in the Army - the Special Investigators. The request? In the form of a deposit of $1030 to his bank account. Reacher is a numbers man - and quickly figures out that the $1030 is a call for assistance. It’s in the late 90’s - and he is able to call a bank and get the identity of the person who made the deposit.
He tracks her down to an area near Sunset Boulevard in LA. Turns out - she got a message from another of their crew - who turned up dead. The other four are not answering their phones. Something is going on. Three of the SI force are dead - the other four meet up - and proceed to take down a corrupt defense contractor and the man who was buying the specialized aircraft missiles that were being sold. LOTS of groundwork and legwork and guesswork on all of their parts. They call in all sorts of favors, travel to Vegas, back to LA, back to Vegas, to Colorado.
A few Lee Child funnies - like Reacher thinking - he could send members of his SI crew to Atlanta - and they would come back with the formula for Coke. Although - he thought it twice - and once was really enough.
Child lets women play a strong role in his books - particularly this one. We have two really bad-ass women in the book. And the helicopter scene at the end - wow.

A fun one, it's the second Jack Reacher I've read and I'm getting into the groove of the character. I do appreciate that he's not actually infallible, he does make mistakes sometimes (just not when it really counts) which is interesting and different from the movies actually.
