bits of this were gems but a lot of it was kind of a slog. definitely no plot, just vibes. but if you don't vibe with it that doesn't really work.

the chapter at the end with Dale was fantastic, though. and I do seem to like a lot of the same authors/books as the narrator. Claire-Louise Bennett uses a lot of repetition, but it doesn't always land its intended punch.

the utter lack of plot will probably make this one a pretty forgettable one for me, I'm afraid. veeery little to hold onto at the end of it.

Perhaps it's done in other books, but it's the first time I've come across prose like this and I found it pretty enjoyable. It's very conversational and made me feel squarely.in her head. It does require some effort though - I couldn't get much out of it when I tried to engage with it passively. I would say there isn't really a story and in many ways, the narrator is the only character. I enjoyed spending time in her heard. <Spoiler> My favorite bits were the Dale chapter towards the end and the teacher portions towards the beginning. Against my better judgement, I also really liked the library story. Oh and I adored the period stuff.
