DNF for now. it hits a different emotional register than the Neapolitan novels. Giovanna is not as immediately sympathetic as Elena or Lila.

This was alright. I liked the setup of the story and I was intrigued to see where everything was going once we first learned about Aunt Vittoria. I found her an interesting character and I liked seeing the development of her relationship with Giovanna. As the story progresses, though, it starts to encompass these additional characters and storylines that I don't think I was as interested in - the stuff with Roberto and Giuliana, Tonino and Corrado, etc. It's not bad though. I'm not sure coming of age stories are necessarily my thing but I thought this one worked fine, basically as a story of Giovanna learning about all the different ways that adults can lie and cheat and collapse under their own insecurities. I enjoyed it.

elena ferrante does it again., this made me want to go back and finally read the neapolitian series fully (ive only read my brilliant friend). the book is capitivating, even though the plot moves almost at a snail pace. i thought the final chapter teased that this will be the first in a series, and if it doesnt, i will be very disappoiunted not to return to giannina.
