Have you ever wanted to read a cringey Hallmark movie but instead of owning a flower shop or holiday themed inn, the MC is a death doula?

In case you are wondering, a death doula according to this book is a person who sits by your bedside, emotionally deals with what the family can’t (like funeral arrangements and recording last words) and is there to hold the dying persons hand if no one else is so they can die with a scrap of humanity instead of alone. It’s honestly a career path we’ll probably see more of unfortunately as people elect to not have children or families.

That being said- that’s the least cringeworthy part of the book. At work Clover is caring, thoughtful and kind.

Outside of work though she’s an awkward recluse who has no friends, and spends all her free time repeatedly watching specifically “90s romcoms”. She’s so awkward but also hot- I was waiting for her to take off her glasses and stun us all in a makeover moment but fortunately we skipped that cliche at least.

The first love interest is a dweeb named Sebastian who is literally allergic to everything. His grandmother Claudia is dying and Clover goes to talk with her about her life story in a series of heartfelt talks that are thinly veiled feminist lectures. Claudia was an international photographer in the 50’s and once she got married “wasn’t allowed” to continue her jet setting career. Marriage was an arrangement she agreed to because she wanted children and stability but didn’t have the options that 36 year old single, dysfunctional Clover has, primarily the ability to freeze her eggs and procreate with or without a man. We find out that Claudia had cheated on her fiancé (later husband) the year she got married with a French guy who, despite having only spent ten days with him, is her ACTUAL true love. How does she determine this? Because he didn’t judge her for wearing pants.
