I thoroughly enjoyed hearing Rick 's youthful adventure on the hippy trail. Even though I had a copy of the book from going who hear him speak on his book tour, I opted to listen to it on the audiobook version instead, and I'm glad I did. It was great to hear him tell about his adventure.

I am a big Rick Steves fan, so that colored my experience a lot. I thought this book was really interesting, and I’m amazed by how detailed his journals must’ve been for him to be able to turn them into this book. He captures a very specific moment in time in a series of very specific places, but in the end, it’s a timeless story about travel, and being young and adventurous, and experiencing new things.

The fact that Rick reads the book himself definitely takes it up a notch. Even if you have never heard of Rick Steves before, I think that this book would be a fun introduction to him and his perspective on the world and on travel.

The one bummer about the book is that I often reflected on how, as a woman, I would not have been able to take this trip very safely, then or now. But I’m glad that he took advantage of his privilege and recorded the whole thing so that I would be able to live vicariously through him nearly 50 years later!
