Probably not for everyone, but it will strike a pleasant chord with anyone who traveled before the age of cell phones and digital reservations. Less of a story than it is a travel log (it's literally Steve's travel journal entries, gently edited), but the photos alone are worth it. They're a beautiful look at what backpack style travel once was, and what the world was before becoming electronically connected.

Describes Rick Steves at 23 years old taking buses through Pakistan, India, to Nepal.
He enjoyed staying on riverboats. He negotiated prices in every place, and locals viewed Western tourists as having a lot of money. Once he was about to leave, they gave him worse service at his hotels. He ate rice with milk and sugar, which they disapproved of.
He thought the Taj mahal was beautiful. He did a guided tour there.
There was a garden (in Jaiphur?) that he thought was gorgeous. He also went to the River Ganges and saw people cleansing themselves. He took a photo when he wasn't supposed to.
He had previously been reticent about smoking pot, and he tried jt for the first time. After doing hashish earlier in the trip. He found pot to be a really pleasant experience that awakened his senses, much like traveling..
There were many descriptions of being cramped on buses and trains, and having other people squish onto his seat.
This was the last year the hippie trail existed, and people couldn't do the same trip anymore because of unrest.
After the end of his trip, he stopped being a piano teacher and switched to starting a travel business instead.
