Travelogue of a young Rick Steves, adventuring through fascinating parts of the east (Turkey, Iran, Kashmir, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal). It's fun to tag along on this trip, particularly because he completed it in 1978, the last year or would be possible due to the Iranian revolution and the Soviet Afghan war. He almost exclusively uses his original journals, so it's written by a 20 something, with his burgeoning inner tour guide just beginning to develop. Not sure I need to know about his first experiences with pot, but it's his journey, man, and colored the experience.
I read this in anticipation of an upcoming trip to Turkey, but unfortunately there's only a brief mention of Istanbul at the very outset of the trip.

I really enjoyed reading about his travels when he was young, and also appreciated that he didn't completely edit the non PC writings that he had made- it's a reminder that we, all of us, are constantly learning and growing, and to not know is okay, but to refuse to learn and change isn't
