Like the audio book and getting to listen to him read his notes. Definitely an interesting idea of a trip and think it was a transformative trip for him.

A light quick piece of armchair travel reading. Enjoyable and an interesting glimpse into a particular and very foreign time and place. Especially interesting to see the makings of Rick Steves, if you are familiar with his more current work.

It was just OK. Narrator sounded like a DJ from the radio. I normally like hearing about people’s travel experiences, but this seemed repetitive between sickness, paying for things and smoking marijuana. I liked the message he gave at the end about how important it is to experience the world.

I used to watch Rick Steves on the Travel Channel all the time and loved how upbeat, insightful, and enthusiastic he was about exploring the world. So when I picked up On The Hippie Trail, I was really hoping for that same energy and detailed storytelling. Unfortunately, this book didn’t quite deliver what I expected.
While there were a few enjoyable moments and interesting glimpses into the places Rick and his friend Gene visited, it felt like so many important details were missing. I wanted to really see the places through Rick’s eyes, but much of the narrative felt rushed or glossed over. On top of that, it was kind of a downer how Gene was sick for most of the trip — it cast a shadow over what should have been a more adventurous and lively travel story.
Not my favorite book I’ve read, especially as a Rick Steves fan, but there were a few parts of the story I did enjoy. Just wish it had the depth and charm of his travel shows.
