I expected it to be more focused on Nicky and Alix, but it was really more about Nicholas's whole reign and downfall. It was an interesting and readable account though, and the author did a good job of keeping a fairly neutral tone.
Fascinating history
An in-depth read through a deeply complex world of intrigue and family and country, this well-researched book takes the dry information of a textbook and turns it into an intriguing narrative.

Heartbreaking...a book so well-written you don't want it to end, while hoping it might end differently.
A comprehensive joint biography of the Tsar Nicholas II and his wife Alexandra Feodorovna, quite sympathetic to them, even as it acknowledged that these people had utterly no political astuteness (and rightly so!).
I think undue weight was given to the role of Rasputin in the downfall of Tsarist Russia, but otherwise I enjoyed the depth of detail and the inclusion of people and events that provided a wide context for the events yet to come. Engaging like the best history books, this one has made me want to wade further into the world of early Bolshevik Russia.

This is an excellent book! It is so well written and is like reading a novel. I read this during my junior year in high school to study the Russian Revolution. You really got to know the family members and why they came to such a devastating end.
An intimate portrait of the last ruling Romanovs. Massey is a fantastic writer and he manages to keep the reader enthralled throughout. His theory that Alexei’s hemophilia was the ultimate undoing of the Imperial family is compelling. And he certainly does a convincing job painting Tsar Nicholas II as less of an incompetent nitwit and more of a nice family man who wasn’t well prepared or suited for the rigors of rule. A must read for anyone fascinated by Russian history.
