“Truth Is Stranger than Fiction, But It Is Because Fiction Is Obliged to Stick to Possibilities; Truth Isn’t” — Mark Twain
The Russian Revolution and the fall of the Romanov dynasty is a part of history I pretty much knew nothing about. This book is very well written and the subject matter was absolutely fascinating. [a:Robert K. Massie|40882|Robert K. Massie|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1321494482p2/40882.jpg] did a wonderful job staying focused on Nicholas and Alexandra and their family. I felt like I personally knew them all by the end.
It is almost unbelievable that all this actually happened. I learned a lot from this book.
This may very well end up as my favorite book of the year!
A recommendation I would give is to read this book in conjunction with the novel [b:Doctor Zhivago|3620743|Doctor Zhivago|Boris Pasternak|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1320091291l/3620743._SX50_.jpg|3288400]. I thought it made a perfect Non fiction / fiction pairing and both books were 5 stars/excellent.

Here we get the end of a three century long imperial dynasty, a devilish villain and wolf in sheep’s clothing, Rasputin, a heartbreaking and debilitating genetic disease of hemophilia suffered by the imperial heir, Tsarevich Alexis, and the rise of Lenin and communism in Russia. This may very well end up as my favorite book of the year!

A really great read that outlines the history, the romance, the tragedy, the murders, the mystery, the politics and the conspiracy behind the fall of the Romanovs.
Reasons I'd Recommend:
1) A wonderful biography of the love story between Nicky & Alix - the love they had for each other; for their children; and for Russia
2) Everyone is fascinated by the mysterious Rasputin and the role he played in the royal family and in Russian politics and in the mystery of it all and
3) its the end of an era; autocracy comes to an end as world war becomes a problem and the twentieth century is greeted with more bloodshed than any century before it.

Really enjoyed this book. Loved the excerpts from letters and dairies , the personal remembrances . Wish there had been some from the children as well .
This book was incredible. I learned so much that I never knew before about the last Czar and his family, the events leading up to the Revolution, and the Russian Revolution itself. I had no idea that so much politics were involved, although it should have been obvious. Rasputin was much more of an influence then I ever imagined. He was also much more disgusting than I ever imagined, and if you are going to read this book, I would be careful when reading the parts about Rasputin.
This book shows the life of Nicholas Romanov clear from before he was married, to the end of his life in the cellar of a house in the Ural Mountains. You learn to know the personality of the Czar, the hardships that his family endured. You come to know the family, and mourn heavily at the end.
I also learned a lot about a part of history that I never learned much about, and it was facinating. I am becoming more and more interested in Russian History, and this book was amazing in how it showed how each separate event came together as a whole, to influence people, Russia, and the world.
I would highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in Russia, and the last Czar, only, as I said, please use discretion in reading the parts about Rasputin.

I found this book fascinating, even though it took me over a year to get through it. Honestly I read it because I watched Amazon Prime's The Romanoffs and didn't know why everyone was being shot in the title sequence. Having finally finished this book I can now say I'm caught up.
Tbh I didn’t expect a book written in 1967 to be THIS GOOD I READ 500 PAGES IN 5 DAYS OVER PADDYS WEEKEND
