This book felt very lit-like. I enjoyed it. Deals with issues of frienship, love, class, gender roles, abortion- the book deals with these complex issues in a way that feels very real.
You know that when you realise Mantel was drawing on themes from her own childhood experiences that you're in for a good* time.

Hilary Mantel is een van mijn lievelingsschrijvers. Zij is zo goed dat ze mij een boek over allerlei dingen die ik niet speciaal interessant vind (de tucht bij internaatsstudentes in vroeger tijden, anorexia, afgunst onder vriendinnen, armoede en de benauwdheid vandien) met heel veel plezier laat lezen. Het maakt dus niet uit waar het over gaat, alles verandert in goud. Het schrijfplezier waarin humor, wijsheid, bijna tastbare beschrijvingen, zintuiglijke ervaringen, poëtische zinnen, immorele kanten aan sympathieke personages (en andersom), spannende opbouw, plot en meer zo prachtig gedoseerd opgediend wordt en toch in elk boek weer heel anders, maakt het nooit voorspelbaar, maar tot nu wel altijd genietbaar.
