there are quite some differences in comparison to the Apple+ series (Pachinko), which I saw before and made me want to read the novel. a sad but definitely interesting read; food for thought, too.

the second half was simultaneously draining and more or less dragging on, but it also left me unsatisfied with how fast the stories were pushed through? we spent so much time with sunja and then all of a sudden the focus shifts tremendously and she is treated as a side character, which I didn’t like so much; I’d rather have the whole story focus on her, even though the others were interesting, too.

One of those books where every time things start going okay you know it's about to get much much worse, but so compellingly written that I was engaged throughout.

Best family-saga/ multigenerational-saga I have read. This novel drew me in the way that a grandparent telling a family story does. I wasn’t reading it to find out what the ending was, but more just because I was so interested in their lives and the domestic struggles of the time/place.

this book was well written and I learned a lot about Korean and Japanese tensions during the late 1800s to late 1900s that were artfully embedded into the story. I didn’t feel like I was dropped into the story but more like I was watching from a distance. The end felt abrupt but maybe it was supposed to be kind of jarring? Would not read again just because of how long it is and how depressing some of the themes are. Very sad but believable story

Pulled me in, I couldn't stop reading. Depressing, but addictive. Noa pissed me off, I wanted to punch him, but an amazing read besides that.
